Pine canal , peg 19 May 30th
With the fisho qualifier coming up this Saturday and having not fished two of the waters that will be in the draw bag , i decided on a trip to Partridge lakes with a few to practicing on one , but not sure which depends on how many people are fishing on Willow lake . Arrived at 9 o’clock and as predicted Willow was packed with pleasure anglers because its one of the best waters on the venue , so it was of to Pine canal for me and as i had never fished it before i asked the advice of a venue regular , who said it was mainly a silver fish water and the odd big f1 .
I drove round to the far side of the complex because this meant i didn’t have as far to travel with my fishing tackle , when i arrived at the pond a few school kids was fishing the better pegs near the island but other than them i had my choice of pegs . The canal it self was over 16m wide for most of its length but went to almost 20m at the top end , i had left my feeder rod at home mistakenly thinking i wouldnt need it to day . I set up my tackle on peg 19 and although it was a calm and sunny day i just didn’t fancy fishing all the way across to the far bank .
My first plan of attack was to fish at 11m in the middle of the channel with on on the drop with caster on the hook and began loose feeding a dozen casters every 60 seconds , it didn’t take long before i was into roach and rudd around 8oz a piece when a smaller stamp of fish got in on the act i just increased the amount of loose feed to draw the bigger fish back .In the first hour i had about 15lb of silvers and a few f1s i thought i was doing quite well but when the balief turned up he informed me that i really needed to be fishing tight across to be catching the plentiful head of f1s and carp .
So out came the extra pole sections and a new rig with a bait band on a change of elastic to a 13 hollo was in order too, plumbing up a long the far bank at 16m i found a flat area 1ft away from the bank where it was 2ft deep , i began loose feeding hard 4mm pellets towards this area and it took me a while for me to get a comfy position because i don’t do a lot of fishing at this sort of distance . First drop and i was into an f1 about 2lb in weight this continued with 15 more in the first hour in between tangled rigs and lost fish but at least it was happening now rather than Saturday , the second hour slowed down a bit but a couple of bigger carp meant i was still catching 30lb an hour and a big weight was on the cards.
The next hour was very hard work as the wind had got up a bit but by changing depths , feeding patterns and tapping i got a few fish in the net and i was thinking of giving the swim a rest when i hooked a zoo creature which bottomed my elastic out and just carried on going with the predictable result of broken hook length and tangled rig .This gave me the chance to rest the area and to try some thing different and that was my 4m line or top 2 plus 2 as it is known , i began loose feeding casters by hand and i was expecting the silvers again so was using by on the drop rig that i used at the start , but after 5 minutes of feeding i noticed some fizzing coming up from the deck and it wasn’t long before i was into a big f1 and then another and then another , it was taking me a bit to long to get them in on my 11 hollo elastic and when one took me under my platform i decided enough was enough .
By changing to 13 hollo and a banded pellet on the hook i dramatically increased my catch rate and because i was running low on casters i started feeding 4mm hard pellets and this also reduced the amount of fizzing coincidence or what im not sure .In the last hour i couldn’t get in quick enough and no sooner had my float settled than i was into another f1 or carp and i had a purple patch putting 30 fish together in forty minutes , i did hook another lump and this time i managed to get it which was a nice 8lb mirror carp and i decided to call this my last fish because i had finally run out of bait.
72 carp and f1s made their way to my landing net today as well as 15lb of silvers , i got through 2pints of hard 4mm , 1 pint of hard 6mm pellets and 1 pint of casters in 6 hours , to catch nearly 180lb of fish un fortunately my regular fishing partner couldn’t make it today so no pictures and he also missed out on a cracking days fishing .
Looks like Partridge lakes is hitting form at just the right time for Saturdays fisho qualifier and it will be hard to predict where the winner will come from , im just hopping for a good draw and a chance to put enough fish in the net , so that’s all the practicing over with and lots of good sessions had on here saving the best till last . Tomorrow will be spent making up rigs and hook lengths in preparation for the big day , so keep coming back to see how i get on .
