Back to Partridge lakes

Back off to Partridge lakes tomorrow to contest the open match , hope the fishing has settled down a bit on their because last weeks weights weren’t that great , come back to see how i get on .

Cheers Gary

Cunneries Fishery

27th November

Cunneries S canal

Cunneries S canal

After Sundays dismal days fishing , i was eager to get back on the bank and among the fish . With the S canal at Cunneries fishery in Eccleston hosting my last match of the Autumnwinter league and as it is also full of f1s which i like fishing for in winter  that’s where i decided to go . I managed to get a dinner time finish at work so after hurriedly packing the car and grabbing some lunch , i headed of on my thirty minute journey to the fishery .

I finally got there at around twelve thirty after getting stuck behind a learner driver for most of the trip !!!  there was a well attended match taking place on the old canal and surprisingly their was also a few fishing on both legs of the S canal because our match was to take place on the left hand side , that is where i headed and settled on peg 16 not far from where i fished on my club match in the summer so it will be interesting to see how it fishes in this colder weather .

Peg 16

Peg 16

When i got to my peg i had a quick look around to see what areas the other anglers were fishing and catching on  because it was a short session maybe only three hours , i wanted to make the most of it and gain as much information as possible and i noticed that those on my canal were fishing tight across using pellets , one was big potting and the other kinder potting so it will be interesting to compare their results at the end of the session . On the other canal they seemed to be fishing in the deeper channel but not catching a great deal after speaking to one of the anglers he said it started ok but had tailed off recently  .

I settled on a 4 ft deep rig which after plumbing up a found it at nine meters on the far shelf and also my top kit , I decided to fish my far line first and only planned on using maggots because looking at recent match results that’s what seemed to be working best on here at the moment .

I used a 4×12 malmams winter wire float with a 0.12 garbo main attached to a 0.10 garbo hook length and a small size 20 gamma black hook . Bait today was half pint of maggot and some 4 mm expanders , soaked micros with a touch of f1 flavouring .

I half filled my medium kinder pot with maggots being careful not to over feed because although it was a quite mild winters day the water was still freezing , after lifting-dropping my rig for a few minutes my float twitched and a gentle lift resulted in my first fish of the day . Which turned out to be an 8 ounce f1 and a further dozen followed some touching the 3 lb mark and was putting up a spirited fight on my orange matrix elastic .

8 oz f1 average stamp

8 oz f1 average stamp

I tried upping the feed to a full medium kinder pot of maggots which got me more bites from a bigger stamp of fish but it also surprisingly brought them up in the water and i began foul hooking the fish , a change of shotting pattern to allow for a slower fall of the bait resulted in an increase in my catch rate although i did deep hook a few and after two hours i had around forty f1s .

I would get spells of catching only gudgeon and in one of these i decided to try my top kit swim but this time with pellets , i hadn’t been preparing this line so i expected it to be a bit slow to start with and after ten minutes my first sign resulted in a gudgeon then another and another , i was just about to give it up as a bad job when i hooked some thing a bit more power full and i landed a f1 and finally they had found the bait . I had around ten fish in an hour but they was coming a lot faster on my nine meter line even after taking into account how long it took to play the fish , so i reverted back to that swim and after having to build it back up because i had neglected it for an hour  the f1s came back in numbers .

It started going dark and cold i was also beginning to run out of maggots and with the remaining hand full i had left , i decided to go back on my top kit line again . This worked really well and was definatley better than using pellets , at 430 i called it a day with sixty fish all f1s between 8 oz and 3 lb for around 40 lb not bad in winter and it compared remarkably well to what i caught during the club match in summer .

As you all know it fishes a lot harder come match day when every peg will be in but at least it gave me an idea of what to expect and to catch a few fish , it might be a good plan to bring two nets with me on the match for when a draw a wind ward corner peg with the f1s balled up in it because im sure you could manage over 60lb even in winter on here .

I’m off to Partridge lakes again on Sunday to fish the open , so lets see how i get on this week !!!

keep coming back to see if i can get my section again .

Cheers Gary .

Blundells Fishery

November 24th

Today was the next to the last round of my Autumn-winter league at Blundells fishery in Warrington , because we had over twenty people attending i had to split the match across two waters ;

Willow lakee

Willow lake

Willow lake

This was a predominately silver fish water and those that had practised on it the previous Sunday had caught really well with double figure nets common , we had two sections of four on here which on a twenty peg water meant that their was plenty of room for everyone .

West canal

West canal

West canal

This has a large head of carp , f1s and ide . Recent match weights had been around the 50 lb mark but with them being a rover you wouldn’t get many on it , so we would have to see how it fishes under more pressure .So as you can guess majority of the anglers wanted to be drawn on here , we had three sections and gave the anglers in the harder areas more room and tightened up the better pegs , to hopefully make it a fairer competion .

With the weather recently being a tad un-settled because we had a strong frost on Saturday and cold all day with blue sky’s , compared to today’s six degree temperature and over cast . I was certainly confused at what to expect next , never mind the fish and im sure that the fishing will improve when it settles down a bit . Because we were spread over the two waters we had an early draw so every one could get to their pegs on time , when it came to my turn their was two left in the bag and one was on Willow which a quite fancied fishing , the other was in a hard section on west canal .

Un-surprisingly my home for the day was peg 12 on the canal , as my drawing arm has let me down recently .When i got to my home for the day i was sweating my knackers off in my celcious suit . The peg its self looked ok with an empty peg to my right and my mate Branny to my left , it was 13 m to the far bank with the odd fish topping down the channel which i presumed was ide .

My rigs for today was ;

13 meter I plumbed up and found 2 ft off water , so i used a 0.2 matrix float with 0.12 garbo line – 0.10 garbo hook length with a size 20 gamma pellet hook .

12 m  I plumbed up here and found 3 ft off water , so i used a malmam diamond pattern with 0.12 garbo line – 0.10 garbo hook length with a size 20 gamma pellet hook .

Top 3 and 10 m , here i found 5 ft of water and used a 4×14 malman winter wire float , with a 0.12 garbo main line and a 0.10 garbo hook length attached to a size 20 gamma pellet hook .

My bait was ;

1/2 pint red maggot

1/4 pint soaked micro

1/4 pint ground-bait

As the all in sounded i went out to 12 m where it was deeper and at the side of some over hanging reeds which hopefully some carp might be taking cover , i purposely left fishing tight across until it warmed up a bit . After feeding six maggots and a few micros every five minutes , i was also lifting-dropping my rig to try to entice a bite but thirty minutes in i was still waiting for an indication .Branny to my left had hooked and lost a carp  and John further too my left had begun catching tight across , so i decided to follow suit but all that followed was another thirty minutes of in activity !!!

So that was two of my swims that wasn’t producing but fingers crossed they might do later , so i decided to try my 10 m line because this was in the deepest part of the peg and hope fully a few fish might be lurking their , but two hours in and i was still waiting for my first sign .

I had been loose feeding a few maggots on to my top three-line and i had wanted to leave it until the last hour but needs must , after about twenty minutes of letting my rig fall through the water and i finally had a bite !!! This resulted in my only fish of the day and a mighty 4oz roach found its way into the net , no more bites followed on this line so yet again another change was in order and i decided to try dobbing bread along the far bank , i hadn’t fished this way before but had read a lot about it .

I worked all along the far bank going into all the fishy looking areas , changing depths and trying every thing to entice a bite from a carp but yet again nothing materialised .Branny decided after three hours of working every inch of his peg that enough was enough and decided to pack up , so that he could catch the second half of the football and if i wasn’t running the match i would have done the same because we are both half decent anglers and only one small roach between us must have meant that no fish where present in the area .

I noticed that the odd fish was topping in the channel , so i began flicking a few maggots in this area while i rotated my swims in the vain hope of picking up a few fish but nothing came of this and if my shallow line didn’t work i was stuffed because the lad on the end peg was getting the odd fish and John had about 10 lb in the net . After fishing my shallow line for an hour and even dropping down to a size 22 hook with a 0.7 hook length  still didn’t result in a bite .

With nothing happening in my peg i decided to rest my peg and have a walk to see what was happening down the bottom end of the canal , when i got their it was noticeably wider around 16 meter but it was fishing just as hard but their was the odd carp coming out and it seemed that towards the middle of the canal was the place to be .

When i got back to my peg i had a quick rotate of my swims to see if any carp had settled on my feed but as expected no more indications followed , after i called the all out i let my solitary roach go and find its friends . Me and John then started the weigh in which didn’t take to long with half of the anglers not weighing in and i was in the middle of a row of four anglers not troubling the scales .

Section A Mike Henshaw , peg 9 – 26lb 4oz

Section B Rob , peg 15 -19lb 6oz

Section C Paul , peg  18 – 7lb 2oz

When we got back to the car with the tackle , i went to help Dave with the weigh in on Willow lake and to my horror this had fished even harder with even the reliable roach and skimmers becoming non-existent .

Section D Kenny b , peg 1 – 3lb 3oz

Section E Dave Machin , peg 6 – 7lb 1oz

Well what can i say about today’s matches , they promised so much and for many delivered very little but from what i have heard from else where many waters had shut down too , so maybe its the in-consistent weather finally taking its toll on the fish . But one lousy match out of four isn’t to bad at this time of year and with one match remaining at Cunneries , i hope it fishes as well as it can do to end the Autumn-winter series  .

Off to Partridge lakes on Sunday for another crack at the open and hopefully i might get out in the week to try to catch a few fish at the Cunneries fishery . Keep coming back to see how i get on .

Cheers Gary

Partridge lakes open match

17th Nov , peg 51 covey 3

covey 3 , peg 51

covey 3 , peg 51

Well here we go again another day and another match to have a go at , today we was off to Partridge lakes to contest the open and what better way to come out of my recent match fishing slump than fishing against a lot of good anglers and the odd big name .

Arrived at the venue at 815 which as you know me was pretty late to get their because im usually the first , after paying the twenty pounds pools i noticed that over 60 were going to be contesting the match today and when we got to the burger bar they were doing extremely well keeping up with the demand as their was also the winter league that Leigh tackle had organized taking place today .

At the draw i pulled out peg 51 which was on covey three and i wasn’t sure if this was a good peg or not because i hadn’t been for over six months , the weather today was quite warm for the time of year which was a mighty seven degrees and it was over cast with drizzle in the air , not bad conditions for a day’s fishing but on the down side it was flat calm which could make it a lot harder .

When i got to my peg it looked ok with a point of an island and an empty peg to my right , the odd fish topped in the channel too which was always a good sign . Although i did over hear a few people saying we was in the suicide section but it looked fishy to me and i couldn’t do anything about it now , so i would just take it easy with the feeding and feel my way into the peg .

I had three rigs set up today but i will be fishing multiple swims trying to keep in touch with the fish ;

Margin + far bank , i plumbed up to find 1 1/2 foot and used a 0.3 matrix float with a spread bulk , my main line was 0.12 garbo attached to a size 18 gamma pellet hook , i decided to step up my elastic on this line to 13 hollo because carp could be present along the far bank and hopefully i would be bagging in the last hour in the margin.

3ft line at 8 meter along the far shelf , i used a 4×12  malmam winter wire with a spread bulk starting above the six-inch 0.10 garbo hook length attached to a size 20 gamma pellet hook . My main line was 0.12 garbo and elastic my usual orange matrix .This turned out to be my only rig that i caught f1s on and in hind sight i should have found that depth on my top four because that is obviously where the fish was more confident .

5ft channel  line at six meters , i used a 4×16 malmams winter wire with a spread bulk above the six-inch 0.10 garbo hook length attached to a size 20 gamma pellet hook , my main line was 0.12 garbo and i didn’t use this rig on the day but yet again in hind sight it could have got me the few extra fish i needed to frame today .

Bait table for the day

Bait table for the day

My bait was the usual ;

1 pint red maggots

1/2 pint soaked micros

1/2 pint soaked 4mm pellets

4mm white and normal expanders

But i decided on a change of ground-bait from crushed expander to a dark green fish meal one , not sure if it made much difference but it didn’t do any harm so will be trying it again on here .

As the all in sounded i went out to my eight meter line and tapped in some micro and ground bait with a normal expander on the hook , surprisingly i was soon into a 1 lb f1 which gave the slightest of sign on the float and next drop i missed a bite , which to my surprise killed the swim !!!!

Average size fish

Average size fish

I persevered for a further thirty minutes on this line taping in a few pellets and lifting-dropping my hook bait but not even another indication , so a change was in order and i re-plumbed a new swim one meter to my right towards the open water . Here i planned on using just maggots to see if this would make any difference because you know how finicky f1s can be at times and this seemed to do the trick with four f1s coming in the next thirty minutes, yet again my swim died and i had been careful not to over feed , so i was puzzled as to the reason ?

I noticed that those anglers to my left where also struggling like me , but the guy to the right who was on the first peg after the bridge was catching the odd fish tight across , so i decided to follow suit using maggot because that seemed the bait the fish wanted today and i worked all along the far bank with only one ide to show for it and you could say things wasn’t going well .

I had been loose feeding maggots to my left hand margin since the start of the match , so a quick try their resulted in nothing not even a liner !!!

Another look on my eight meter swim produced a few f1s but they was only coming every twenty minutes and if you missed a bite that was that for a while , three hours in and i had only 12 fish in the net Not good ! ! worse was to follow when i had a run of six bumped fish , some was my fault because i tried to rush them in and some i think was foul hooked . Although when i put on a new hook it seemed to solve the problem but im afraid the damage may have already been done .

In the last hour the wind got up a bit , blowing towards my bank and this also coincided with my best spell of the match with me catching six f1s , topped off with a near 3 lb one but it was really hard work and i had to keep changing hook baits , depths etc to keep the bites coming .

As the all out sounded i was unsure just how i had done and i knew that i had beat the two anglers to my left but couldn’t see the others round the corner , my 18 fish went 28lb which as you can tell are a good stamp and luckily i had managed to win my section but that spell of lost fish probably cost me from framing which is very hard to do on here with the quality of angler your competing against .

46lb won from peg 60

43lb got 2nd from peg 1

36lb was last in the money .

A hard but enjoyable match today and one which i think that i learned a lot , just may be my match fishing had turned for the better Fingers crossed . Off to Blundells on Sunday for the next round of my Autumn- winter league and we have 26 fishing which is a good turn out so just hope the weather isn’t too bad .

Keep coming back to see how i get on .

Off to partridge lakes tomorrow to fish the open match on covey , not been for 6 months and was waiting for the winning weights to start dropping to give everyone a better chance , still  lots of big names attending them but really looking forward to it .
