Covey three

Well today was my last chance to get on the bank of Partridge lakes before my Fisho qualifier on the 1st June , but the weather today was going to play a major part in how it would fish because it was forecast to be awfully windy but thankfully not as wet as on Saturday . I was travelling on my own today with my mate deciding to go on Sycamore fisheries match where he has done well recently  . so i choose to set off a bit later than usual so i wouldn’t be hanging about for ages and when i got their i found out that we had 75 fishing so just a little match to get me back in the groove . It was soon draw time and when it came to my turn i pulled out peg 57 on covey three yet again , it also wasn’t far from where i fished on my last Tuesday here and struggled .

When i got to my peg it was the only one on the lake that didn’t have an empty peg on each side although i did have the aerator to fish too plus the wind was blowing in to my face and the recent tactic on here for a decent weight was either worm-caster in both margins near and far or to fish shallow and i decided on the later because their was plenty fish topping so i set up three rigs to cover different depths but with the wind gusting from left-right i decided to only take 4 meters of pole out of my bag today .

Rigs

Deck rig , malmams speedy float with an on the drop shotting pattern , my main line was 0.12 garbo line direct to a size 20 gamma pellet hook .

3ft , 4×12 preston chianti float with five number 11 stotz spread down the line for a slow fall of the hook bait , my line was 0.12 garbo direct to a size 20 gamma pellet hook .

1ft , 4×8 maver float with three number 13 stotz spread down the line allowing for a slow fall of the hook bait , my line was 0.12 garbo direct to a size 20 gamma pellet hook .

Bait

Four pints mixed maggots

As the all in sounded i went out to 4 meters with my mid-depth rig and began cattying maggots at my float , i had not expecting an instant response but thirty minutes without a fish wasn’t good , i had got indications but couldn’t connect with any so i swapped rigs for the shallower one to see if they was line bites this resulted in me hooking an ide which came off on the way in and then a 2 ounce roach which would explain the missed bites and i had never seen fish this size in here before but it wasn’t a good sign because their obviously couldn’t be any f1s knocking about .

I put my shot all together to create a bulk rig to see if this would improve me hitting the bites and it sort of did but i was catching ide not the hoped for f1s , it just didn’t seem to be working for me and the wind was playing havoc with my feeding pattern because i wasn’t able to feed heavy enough or double feed and since i started fishing shallow the wind has never stopped being gusty .

I cupped in some maggots-pellets on both margin lines and tried the deep rig in the channel where i had been loose feeding maggots but this just produced more line bites so the fish were definitely up in the water , the lad to my left was catching really well shallow too so what was i doing wrong ! ! ! I decided to rest this line and try my left hand margin after a blank twenty minutes this finally produced two big f1s the other side produced a mirror carp , so i finally put some fish in the net but i was well behind in the section so i decided to concentrate on my shallow line to try to make it work because i will need it on here .

I swapped my 1ft rig for a heavier more positive one which i used when i caught my match record of 77 lb from covey four because i felt the one i was using had got blown around too easily in the conditions .

Rig

0.3 matrix series three float with a bulk of stotz about 4 inch from the hook to allow for a positive rig which would help in hooking , my line was 0.12 garbo direct to a size 20 gamma pellet hook .

This did not produce a single bite though and tapping-slapping didn’t either which had worked extremely well on my last visit but the guy to my left was doing this and he seemed to be feeding much less which was just confusing ! ! although he was fishing further out and had a wider section of covey three plus the wind was blowing directly into his peg .

With two hours to go i had about 15 lb which was a bit pathetic for on here but when i changed on to my 3 ft rig i finally began getting a few f1s and at last the peg was producing some fish , i shortened an identical rig to 2 ft and by constantly laying in my rig through the feed i was getting f1 after f1 and really didn’t want the final whistle .

So after what was a really confusing days fishing i had 25 f1s – 2 carp -lots of ide for 53 lb 8oz and about 40 lb of that i caught in the last two hours when the f1s turned up in numbers , i wasnt sure if it was the

Heavier feeding

Or rig i was using

that got the fish feeding but it has given me lots to think about before my next visit on here for the Fisho qualifier and overall it fished extremely well with a couple of 90 lb weights in my section alone but in the mean time i will be back on the Sycamore fisheries evening match before my fortnight off fishing .
