Coppull lodge

Today i decided to have a trip to a local deep natural water Coppull lodge for a sneaky practice before our knock up with the rest of the squad next Saturday because we where looking at a few venues to use for the upcoming Angling times supercup and this was a place that isn’t your standard fishing so we hoped that it could give us an advantage over the other teams , i hadn’t been here for about three years so i was expecting to be catching plenty roach+perch shallow like on my previous visits but i had also heard that the skimmers were going to be the target species today so i was quite looking forward to the challenge .

After a bit of a lie in i arrived at Coppull lodge just after nine and i was surprised to find six anglers having a little knock up plus three carp lads with nine rods out so as you can imagine it was a little bit crowded , i didn’t fancy sitting on one of the more fancied car park pegs because i doubt that i would learn a great deal and managed to squeeze in half way down the right hand bank , on getting to my home for the next few hours i decided to set up just the two rigs ;

7m deck rig it was top three deep here so i used a 0.8 perfect Gloucester float with a bulk at two foot plus two dropper shotting pattern my main line was 014 garbo which had a six-inch length of 010 garbo and my hook was a size 18 guru maggie .

4ft rig for fishing shallow and i used a 4×12 maggie float with a strung out shotting pattern my main line was 014 garbo which had a six-inch length of 010 garbo and my hook was a size 18 guru maggie .

Bait for the day was

2 pints of red and white maggots

3 pints of ground-bait 70/30 frenzied hemp and ringers green

I began my session by cupping in five balls of ground-bait onto my seven meter line and i expected a bit of a wait before the fish settled on it but surprisingly i had a small skimmer almost straight away although it seemed to be a loner as i had no further indications in the next forty minutes , i was beginning to think that i had made a big mistake feeding so much at the start especially as i hadn’t seen anybody put anything in the net so far , then out of the blue my float slid under with a 10oz skimmer hitting the bank and a six more similar sized fish followed in a twenty-minute spell it looked like they had finally settled on the ground-bait . when bites began to tail of a bit i began loose feeding maggots to try to draw some roach into the peg so that i could catch shallow and therefore let the skimmers re group on the deck , after a while i began getting the odd liner so i put in a couple more balls in and picked up my shallow rig but after twenty minutes all i had to show for it was a tiny roach plus a missed bite not really what i had expected because on my last visit you could catch 10lb up in the water from every peg .

It was time to drop back on the deck but i continued the loose feeding and the skimmers were lined up again as i had another good spell  all the fish were like peas in a pod and in a couple of years time it will be a really good skimmer water , i did notice that i was getting stupid indications on the float and felt that the constant fall of maggots had brought them off the deck but only by a couple of feet so i decided to knock that on the head for the time being , i then had a quiet spell for twenty minutes and i was beginning to doubt my decision but i found out what had unsettled the skimmers as yards of elastic came shooting out of my pole tip when i finally got it to the net i saw a huge perch then the hook pulled so after a few swear words i went back out again .

The skimmers were still a bit iffy again so i choose to start kinder potting in a ball of ground-bait every five minutes or after a fish this seemed to settle them down  and i went on another little run of fish , strangely when the sun poked its head from behind the clouds the bites stopped and even in this deep water the bright conditions had a bearing on how the fish reacted after a while it dulled a bit and the fish were back on the feed again , at three o’clock the knock up finished and i wanted to see how they had got on which would give me a bit more of an insight on how it fished on the other pegs so i packed up at the same time , the match was won with just six pounds and they kindly weighed my catch it went a shade over twelve pounds not too bad for my first visit in a few years i also learned a great deal which was my main reason for going in the first place .

I’m back at Partridge lakes for the penultimate round of the individual winter league which i am really looking forward to i just hope that i can draw a good peg and catch a few fish .

coppull lodge

Well today was my first venture out to the banks over the Christmas holidays because my wife had been ill after having her operation , so making the most of her feeling better i decided on a trip to Coppull lodge and i had been offered the option of fishing a couple of matches but after putting up with the kids i just fancied blowing away the cobwebs . After me getting a bit of flack recently because i have done a lot of f1 matches recently , so what i like fishing for f1s !!!! so i decided to have a got at fishing a natural water for roach to prove that i have more strings to my bow than just f1 catching and to make it even harder i left my pole at home and decided to use my waggler rod but i did also have my tip rod to use for when the wind made fishing the float problematic .

The weather leading up to today was best described as a bit dodgy with gales , heavy over night rain and a drop in temperature , so fishing on most waters would be hard but after last years trip when it was frozen it still fished well and you can always rely on the plentiful head of roach to turn up . As i set off to the venue there was plenty of dark clouds and just as i got to coppull the sleet started coming down but their was blue sky in the distance which was promising for the day ahead .

After a ten minute wait in the car for the rain to subside i made the decision to begin tackling up and luckily on Coppull lodge the best pegs are right near the car park , today the wind was also in my favour with it blowing off my back so i wouldn’t need the hassle of carrying my gear round to the far side of the lake to get better presentation on the waggler. The down side was that these pegs can often get over fished but in winter this shouldn’t be a problem because their isn’t many anglers brave or daft enough to venture out in the conditions over winter and in fact only four anglers graced the banks on here today .

Upon settling in at my peg i decided to make it a really un complicated day because the roach respond well to shallow fishing on here and in fact their was a few topping when i got their , after my past visits i knew that it was about 12 ft deep so i decided to start at 6 ft which was mid depth and then go shallower as the day progressed .

Tackle

12 ft drennon red float rod

shimano reel

4 lb Maver genisis main line

3 bb clear insert waggler with three number 10 stotz as droppers

3 ft of 0.10 garbo hook length

size 20 gamma pellet hook

Bait

1 pint red maggots with a few fluro pinkies mixed in as a change bait if it fished harder than expected .

With my rod already set up it wasn’t long before i got started , the back ground reflection on Coppull mill lodge was a little patchy and it took me a while to find some where i could see the dimpled float tip which was needed for the delicate roach bites on here . I found a patch of dark in the water at about 16 m and this where i began fishing , i was loose feeding six maggots every minute and was also re casting every five minutes . After about 15 minutes i had my first bite which of course i missed and in fact i didn’t hit any of my first eight because i was struggling to get my line sunk but after a quick squirt of watered down washing up liquid and flicking my rod tip under the water solved the problem .

I began hitting the bites now and every fish i caught was over 4 oz but they would come in patches and seemed like a big predator was making them un easy , in fact about an hour in i hooked some thing a bit un expected and after a spirited fight i saw the erect dorsal fin of a big perch in the clear water but un fortunately after seeing it i began to play it a bit more gingerly which was a big mistake because this resulted in the hook pulling out of its boney mouth just as i was reaching for my landing net, i was under stand-ably gutted because perch are my favourite fish and i haven’t caught one that size for a few years .

After getting my composure back from losing that fish the roach where back feeding again but no matter how many depths i tried  i was still missing plenty bites and it was only when i re sorted to putting a single pinkie on the hook that i found out why because my next three bites resulted in three 1 oz roach not exactly what i wanted to catch so i decided to go back on red maggot and put up with the missed bites for better quality fish .

We soon had another hail storm and this made the roach go lower in the water, i had a thirty minute spell without even a bite and i tried at the deepest depth i could manage on the float rod and i was on the verge of getting my tip rod out before the sun came out and i started getting bites again, it seemed strange that you would catch five or six then nothing for about ten minutes and i finally worked out that the best depth was 3 ft , i began putting a run of fish together which included a couple over 1 lb although it was a shame they wasn’t in better condition .

final catch

final catch

After four hours fishing it looked like it was going to rain again and with all my gear just beginning to dry out i decided on one more fish before i packed up and just as i was about to net it when i noticed that their was a swirl behind it and some thing had followed it in but i have no idea what it could have been . I ended up with nearly forty roach with the biggest being over 1 lb and i was well into double figures weight , un fortunately my usual travel companion decided to fish a match on Hewlit pond where he had done extremely well , so the pictures today aren’t really up to scratch especially the final catch shot which is a shame .

After speaking to the balief he informed me that their was no pike present in the lodge so it must have been another big perch , so if you fancy a dabble at the plentiful head of roach or even the big perch give it a go because its fishing well and only three quid for a day’s fishing .

I am off to fish a match at Hall lanes Gwens canal that my mate the big dipper is arranging on Monday for my last match of the year , so lets hope its a good one .

With there not being much work in i decided to take advantage of a half day and went fishing on coppul lodge a 30 peg natural water , my mate whose just got back in to angling had been middering me to take him for a few weeks and it being a silver fish water we were always going to get a few bites .

When we arrived at one we chose the closest pegs to the car park to fish from even though we had a slight breeze blowing towards us i didn’t think it would hinder us even though we were fishing shallow and cattying maggots out .

Coppul lodge is quite deep close in and the best way to fish it is up in the water so with it still being cold i decided on a 4ft on the drop rig with a 0.07 hooklength to a size 20 gamma black hook . Started off at 11m so i could chase the fish out later in the session .

It made a change not having to set up loads of rigs and plumb up lots of areas and it took us no time at all before we were fishing , there was an older guy fishing on the right hand bank and when the balife came round he told us he was also fishing shallow but on bread punch and was doing well .

It took me a good twenty minutes of feeding and constantly laying my rig in before i got my first fish which was a dumby 4oz roach , i pretty much got a fish every put in for an hour before they backed off a bit and i had to follow them out to 13m but strangely i never had a fish on the drop and the bites became very iffy too and i put this down to the water being so clear , i decided to put a bulk of shot just above the hooklength and this increased how many bites i hit and turned the little dinks into proper bites .

Nearly every fish was a roach apart from two perch and a bonus 1lb skimmer , they were all between 4oz and 10oz , we called it a day at four because my hands were cold with handling all the fish which i had over 60 for nearly 15lb not bad in the conditions and only used half pint of maggots which i had left over from the weekends match on partridge, it made an enjoyable change fishing for silvers and getting lots of bites instead of f1 chasing .

My mate had a good day too , he struggled at first before i altered his rig by adding more shot to dimple the float tip down , reduced the length of line to his float and put him a smaller hook on , he ended up with 20 roach his best total yet and was amazed how many fish i was catching , cant wait to take him fishing in the summer when the fishing and weather will hopefully be a lot better .

COPPUL LODGE 22ND JAN 2012

Very unsettled weather in jan, one day freezing one day blowing a gale like today
With the weather being so bad we decided on a rover so no one could blame anyone for a bad peg, had 4th choice and my priorty was the wind off my back, wasn’t expecting big weights because presentation would be hard. Picked a peg near the carpark and decided on 6m swim top and bottom and a feeder rod, bait was white mags and f1 ground bait .
Its a very deep venue 10ft at 6m and full off silvers which is good at this time off year, but finding were there lying could be a problem.
Started on the deck with white mags and fed a small hard ball of ground bait to get the skimmers feeding. Got bites from the off from small 2oz roach but even with a heavy float with a big bulk got bites on the drop, knowing most people were fishing on the deck looking for skimmers I decided on what turned out to be a match winning move off fishing 4ft deep just under half depth, loose feeding white mags quite heavy for the time off the year which resulted in a bigger stamp of fish and a few pound plus roach and perch which bottomed out my 6 elastic, was catching very regular one every five mins and from what I could see no one else was catching. branny landed a 2lb crucian and guy on the next peg landed a few skimmers but no one else seemed to be catching much.
Wasn’t expecting to keep the catch rate up and every 20mins the roach would back off and perch would move in this seemed to be the pattern till late in the match, I noticed was running low on mags and decided to use sloopy breadfeed to create a cloud but all this did was fill my peg with tiny roach and just couldn’t hit the bites. At the all out most people who fished up in the water seemed to get this problem.
1st me 12lb 10z
2nd ste 4lb 6oz
3rd malc 3lb 2oz
A very good result for me and a well fished match, looking forward to fishing it again hopefully next week when less windy.
Two match wins on the bounce my best ever sequence of wins, after a bad run of results was made all the better
